Women being harassed on New Year's eve in Mumbai is nothing new. So, to ensure that that doesn't happen, Mumbai police are taking several measures, including segregating queues for women and couples at public places. Police have also formed anti-eve teasing squads to ensure that revellers do not harass women.

“Safety of women is one of the top priorities of the department. Women being subjected to any kind of harassment will not be tolerated. Police stations have been asked to form anti-eve teasing squads which will work in crowded places, keeping an eye on revellers. Action will be taken against anyone caught misbehaving with women,” said Mumbai police spokesperson deputy commissioner of police (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

Apart from this is the plan to segregate queues on December 31 night. “People throng places like Girgaum Chowpatty, Marine Drive, Juhu Chowpatty and Gateway of India on New Year's eve. Women don't find it convenient standing in queues in such situations. So we will have separate queues for women and couples. We will also ensure that there is no stampede-like situation in crowded places,” said Kulkarni. Special control rooms will be set up at these places to keep a watch on unruly revellers through CCTVs,” said Kulkarni.

Leave of the entire police force has been cancelled on December 31 and January 1. “About 70 per cent of the 46000-strong force will be deployed to ensure safety and security on Dec 31 night. We will also round up criminals and drug addicts as a preventive measure,” said another police officer.

No boating will be allowed off the Gateway of India coast. While hotels and restaurants are allowed to serve liquor till 5am, they are not allowed to serve liquor in open areas in their premises. There will be about 14 BDDS (bomb disposal) squads all over the city.

Beside city police, 20 platoons of SRPF and 1,100 homeguards, including officers, will be guarding the city. State's elite commando force, Force One, will be on standby while armored carriers of city's specialist combat force, Quick Response Team, will be strategically located.

Traffic diversions
As large number of people are expected to gather at various places on New Year's eve, traffic police have announced several traffic restrictions to prevent inconvenience to public. The regulations will be in place between 7pm on December 31 and 4am on January 1. Roads in South Mumbai such as PJ Ramchandra Marg, Chatrapaji Shivaji Maharaj Marg, Adam Street, Miyaz Road and Henry Road will be closed to vehicular traffic. One-way restriction will be imposed on roads such as BEST Marg from Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg Junction to PJ Ramchandani Marg Junction. Cooperage Road will be closed to southbound traffic from Ambedkar Statue Junction to BEST Junction.

The suburban division of Mumbai traffic police have also announced a few traffic diversions. Several roads in Juhu area will be converted to one-ways, no parking/no entry zones. Traffic from SV Road till Juhu Tara Road will be one way for west-bound vehicles between 3pm on Dec 31 to 5am on Jan 1. Parking will be restricted on both sides of Juhu Road in the same period. Traffic from Juhu Road to VM Road Junction will have one way restrictions as well. That apart, entry will be closed to west-bound traffic on VM Road towards Juhu chowpatty.
