Monsoon winds on Monday reached Maharashtra up to Ratnagiri. However, in the last 24 hours, there has been no advancement in the rains and the Indian Meteorological Department is unwilling to set a date on their arrival in the state's capital.

"We have been waiting for the monsoon to advance, but so far, there is no progress. The monsoon winds have stayed put in Ratnagiri. We cannot yet predict its arrival in the city," said Dr KS Hosalikar, deputy director general of IMD.

After the monsoon arrived in Kerala on Friday, Mumbai enjoyed its first bout of pre-monsoon showers on Sunday, with many believing the rains to be the beginning of the season. However, those showers just resulted in increasing the temperatures. Since then, humidity has risen, reaching 94% on Monday. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature reached 36.8 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 25.6 degrees Celsius. The humidity in the suburbs, however, reached 83%, while in the city it stayed put at 65%.

Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm Ashobaa over east-central Arabian Sea has been moving in northwest-ward in the past day and may result in increased wind speed. Areas of Konkan, Gujarat and Goa may experience heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours, according to a report released by the Met department.

However, the cyclonic storm will not have any effect on the monsoon, VK Rajeev, director of weather forecast, said. "Ashobaa will not have any impact on the monsoon winds, we are hoping that it does not intensify. In the meanwhile, we have issued a warning, asking fishermen to not go into the sea as it is not safe at the moment," he added.
