Nerul-based classical singer and teacher, Bharamar Banerjee has organised a music programme to pay tribute to her parents.

Nerul: A soulful music programme to be held in Agri Koli Bhavan this Saturday will have five-year-old children to women over forty years of age singing a variety of songs that are known favourites. The programme is being organised by singer and teacher Bharamar Banerjee, to not only help her children prove their musical prowess but also as a tribute to her parents.

"My parents have been a great source of inspiration and a driving force in all my musical endeavours. As I lost them a few months back, I realised that their role in my life in irreplaceable.

Though this programme is my academy's first annual event, it is firstly an initiative to recognise their contributions," said Banerjee, who will render a Saraswati Vandana to begin the evening. She has completed her Bisharad in classical music and Nazrul Geeti from two universities - Allahabad and Chandigarh. For the past 10 years, she has been running Iman Sangeet Academy in Nerul and currently trains 70 students in Hindustani classical, Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet.

This will be the first prominent stage performance for her students and the kids are most excited to give their best. There is a separate group of women for Bengali folk and modern songs that will be sung apart from old and latest Hindi songs. Banerjee said that she has chosen the songs in a way that will not only keep the audience engrossed, but also help children enjoy the singing. "Singing a song on the stage should be an eventful and enjoyable experience, especially for small children. Thus, I have picked some light songs," she said.

Audric Sadhukhan, a five-year-old student will be performing a solo performance, rendering a folk song. "Since he was three-and-a-half years old, he had an interest in music and thus, we decided to take it forward. He would listen to songs and try to hum the tunes correctly. He is able to listen to songs a few times and sing them with precision," said Smarani Sadhukhan.

Parents feel that if the child shows an inclination for an art from a young age, it is better to channelise it. "My daughter used to listen with rapt attention when my sister-in-law's daughter used to learn music. She was around three-years-old and has been learning music for over nine years now. As she used to sing and learn with her desire, we thought it best to train her systematically," said Munmun Sarkar.
