City crime branch sleuths on Monday arrested a man for allegedly demanding Rs10 lakh from a Mulund-based builder. The police had a hard time tracing and arresting the suspect. He foiled police traps on 3 occasions by not coming to receive the extortion money and when he was finally caught, he threatened to consume poison. However, the police overpowered him.

The arrested person has been identified as Anandrao Laxman Hindelkar, 58, a resident of Diva in Thane.

According to crime branch sources, the victim has been receiving threat calls from an unknown number since Diwali last year. Claiming to be a close aide of fugitive gangster Guru Satam, the caller demanded Rs10 lakh. The amount was later settled at Rs4 lakh.

Though the caller had warned the victim not to approach the police, he did go to the police. The victim lodged a complaint with Mulund police in October last year. Joint commissioner of police, crime, Sadanand Date then asked anti-extortion cell chief inspector Vinayak Vast to look into the matter.

"The accused had called the victim to a pre-decided spot but failed to show up. He did this on at least three occasions and all our traps got failed. We then got his mobile call details and managed to trace him to his Diva residence," said a crime branch officer.

"On Monday, when a police team went to nab Hindelkar, he created a lot of ruckus. Firstly, he did not allow the police to nab him and attempted to flee and later threatened to consume poison. But we managed to get hold of him," the officer said.

Hindelkar told the police that he had received contact details of the builder from his friend who works with the builder. Hindelkar's custody was handed over to Mulund police for further probe.
