After the completion of the two-month deadline to comply with fire safety norms, the Thane Municipal Corporation has finally started cracking its whip on the city’s hotels on Sunday. The TMC has already sealed 24 hotels out of the 86 which do not have the no objection certificate (NOC) for fire safety norms.
Following the Kamala Mill fire tragedy, the civic body had threatened action against the city’s hotels, pubs and hookah parlors which do not have the NOC from the TMC’s fire department in mid January.
On 28 December 2017, a massive fire in a pub at Kamala Mills had killed over 14 people. The incident shook the civic bodies in Maharashtra to ensure fire safety in pubs and restaurants.
Subsequently, the eateries and hookah parlours in Thane were given a 15 day grace period to abide by the fire safety norm. However, even after an extended deadline of over two months, only 80, out of the 426 eateries and pubs in Thane, have obtained the NOC from the fire department.
Around 260 NOC applications are still pending with the town planning department and 86 have have not applied for the NOC, informed Sandip Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner of TMC.
“Hence, the TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has given orders to seal them in the next three days. Following which 13 were sealed on March 4 and 11 were sealed on March 5. The remaining will be sealed in the coming days,” he added.
PENDING NOC’S
- Only 80 hotels and bars have received a fire safety NOC, of the total 460 hotels in Thane.
- 260 applications are still pending with TMC. 80 hotels have not applied for NOC
