The Vile Parle police on Monday arrested four persons, including two Nigerians, who had allegedly duped a Gujarat-based businessman to the tune of Rs21 lakh. The accused persons were on Tuesday produced before a court, which remanded them in police custody till February 26.

The arrested quartet has been identified as Tony Obuna Mujordima alias Michale Din, Omen Osakuye alias Manka Purgeorge, Rahudeep Boricha alias Nitn Agrawal and Shamgovind Tripathi alias Pandey.

According to the police, complainant Ketan Patel is a native of Gujarat and is a businessman by profession. In January this year, Patel had received an email. The sender claimed to be manager in a UK-based company that supplies medicines. The email also stated that the said company was working on preparing a medicine that can cure ailments like AIDS and cancer and that it wanted some ayurvedic seeds from India.

"Patel was told that if he can help them in providing the seeds, he would be entitled to huge profits. The sender also provided the number of a contact person who can provide seeds to Patel and the latter can send those seeds to him on a huge commission. Patel then met the contact person in a Vile Parle hotel and gave him Rs21 lakh for seeds in several instalments," said a police officer.

However, after the completion of the deal, the contact person switched off his mobile phone. After having realised that he has been duped, the victim lodged a police complaint. "On receipt of specific information, the gang was apprehended. We suspect them to be involved in many such crimes with more members associated with the gang," the officer said.
