In a significant crackdown by the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police this year, two drug dealers were caught red-handed with hashish (charas) worth Rs4.55 lakh near a high-rise in Wadala.

The police suspect that the substance, weighing 3.5kg, was to be distributed among college students in the city. The accused have been identified as Radheshyam Saha, 32 and Piyush Saha, 28, and cops seized the hash from them.

While Radheshyam is a dealer who travelled to the city from the Indo-Nepal border, close to Motihari district of Bihar, to hand over the drug, the second accused is a resident of Kumbharwada near Pydhonie.Based on a tip-off, the officials from the Ghatkopar unit of the ANC swung into action and deployed 10 officers near Ajmera I-land building in Wadala (East) on Wednesday afternoon.

API Uttam Rikame from ANC's Ghatkopar unit said, "The 10 of us scattered around the spot in plain clothes, and around 1 pm, Radheshyam alighted from the Monorail, carrying two huge rexine bags and called the second accused over phone to the bus stop near the building."

Within minutes, the second accused appeared and he was handed one of the rexine bags by Radheshyam. Following this, the duo was caught by the officials and taken in custody.Inquiries revealed that Radheshyam had brought the drug from the border to supply it to dealers in the city. While he was caught with 2 kg hash, Piyush, the local dealer, was caught with 1.5 kg of it.

"We suspect that the local peddler was involved in distributing drugs to college students. We are yet to find out how the two came in touch and what bigger network they are part of," said a police officer.

Officials suspect the duo may have been involved in more cases of drug trafficking, and are in the process of conducting raids at their dwelling places where more contraband could be recovered. The accused told the police that they were to receive Rs10,000 commission each for handing over and distributing the substance in the city.

"We are verifying the customer base of the duo. This case could lead us to bigger rackets, not only in the city but also those operating on the border," said Vijay Belge, senior inspector of ANC's Ghatkopar unit.
The duo have been arrested for drug possession and trafficking under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and have been remanded in police custody till February 10.
