2 arrested for chain snatching in SoBo near Kalbadevi, jewellery recovered

Prompt action and alertness of a constable helped arrest a chain-snatcher last week.

The stolen gold chain, which was worth over Rs1 lakh, was recovered, said the police.
While one of the accused persons was nabbed by a constable posted at VP Road police station, the other accused, who had managed to escape, was later arrested by officials of the Nagpada police station.

The incident occurred on Thursday near Kalbadevi. A woman was walking on the road when two bikers slowed down near her and snatched her gold chain and sped away.

The police constable who was nearby managed to note down the bike’s registration number and started chasing the bike.

After chasing the thief for about half a kilometre, he managed to overtake the bike and nab one of the accused who was sitting pillion.

Sadik Shaikh, 28, was arrested while the second accused, Atif Khan, 28, managed to flee. He was later arrested by the Nagpada police in a separate case and handed over to the LT Marg police. Shaikh too was handed over to the LT Marg police as the crime had occurred in their jurisdiction.

The accused have been booked for robbery.

 With 286 cases of chain-snatching registered in north region till July this year, the police are adopting new ways to nab criminals. The police have installed CCTV cameras at many places in the north region and this has helped them in nabbing 18 chain snatchers.
