On Thursday (Jan 22), between 12 and 1.30pm, a 14-year-old, class eight girl, who had been on drugs for the past two months, committed suicide at her residence in Vartak Nagar, Thane by hanging herself from the ceiling with a bed sheet. The girl's parents have confirmed she was under the influence of drugs, but refused to believe she was suicidal.

The victim was alone in the house. She must have climbed onto the fridge in the kitchen, tied the bed sheet to the ceiling fan and hanged herself.

Around 2pm, neighbors knocked on the door and when there was no response, they broke open the front door. Her elder sister who went into the room found her hanging from the ceiling. Though she was brought down and rushed to Thane civil hospital, she was declared 'dead on admission'.
According to the victim's mother who had gone out for some work, the girl had not gone to school. Her other daughters were in school and her husband was at work. "Around 2pm I got a call from a neighbor who told me that my daughter was unconscious, and I rushed to the civil hospital, but was told she had died. I was shocked. When I checked with her friends, they said they weren't aware she had some problem," the mother said.

She added: "My girl hated being called her girl's name. She would quarrel when anyone in the family did that. She was our favourite and we used to treat her like a boy. She had many male friends. I have doubts about a few, as I believe they are drug addicts. In the past two weeks she had stopped sharing things with us. When I asked the reason, she did not respond. I have scolded her for being in boys' company, but she used to hate being with girls. We will now see if we can donate her organs."
The deceased's younger sister said: "I want to punish those who diverted my sister's mind. In the last one week, whenever she was alone in the house, she used to scratch her face and on and off the lights and fans, and keep the door closed. And, she had started behaving like a girl – wash clothes and utensil, etc.

She added: "I want to stop the drug problem in our area. My sister used to go to the jungle area in Nulpada along with her friends everyday around 9.30pm and return after 10pm. There were dark circles under her eyes; she used to skip meals and had stopped sleeping at night. When she went to school, she used to carry her frock in her bag and used to wear it when she left school. Once I even went to the spot and asked my sister not to take drugs and also scolded her friends, but she slapped me and asked me to go home."
According to a source in the police, the girl was sniffing whitener and one day her father scolded her. She was angry and the next day she committed suicide.

Investigation officer Sandip Patil of Vartak Nagar station said: "We have registered an ADR (accidental death) case. The girl's parents have said they believed her friends had provoked her into committing suicide. We are investigating."
