Nestle has finally woken up to the magnitude of its troubles with Maggi noodles in India with its global CEO Paul Bulcke holding a press conference terming Maggi has a safe product.

Bulcke said, "We do not add Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) to the product. What we do is with keeping the consumer in mind." He said that MSG found by Uttar Pradesh Government in Maggi is naturally occuring.

Nestle said that Maggi noodles has been in the Indian market for the past three decades and the traces of lead found in the packets are what's omnipresent in Indian environment.

"India is important to Nestle," he said.

Bulcke further said that the company is trying to  understand methods used by authorities in India to test Maggi as the comapny does not add any MSG into the product.

He also said that the company is open for inspection by Indian authorities and will cooperate fully.

Meanwhile, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked Nestle to submit a compliance report in three days. It has also asked Nestle to remove a variant of Maggi noodles from the market immediately.

Earlier in the day, Nestle said that the company has decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe.

It said, "The trust of our consumers and the safety of our products is our first priority. Unfortunately, recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer...."

This controversy began when the Uttar Pradesh government found that quantity of lead in Maggi is more than permissible.

Following this, many state governments began testing Maggi samples for possible traces of MSG and lead.

As of date, Maggi noodles has been banned in Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh with a timeline ranging from 15 days to 1 month.

The impact of the findings has hit Nestle globally as well with Nepal and Singapore halting Maggi exports from India.
