Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that he expected Digital India to be a $1 trillion economy in the next 5-6 years.

Speaking at FICCI Frames 2016 conference he said, “$400 billion will be from manufacturing technology mobile phones, solar panel, etc, $350 billion will be from IT and IT enabled services and $250 billion from communication services. This will totally contribute $1 trillion to digital India. It will not only be a big market for built up products, but even for entertainment products.”

He said that he foresees four things happening in the future in Digital India:

1.    Tier 2-3 cities due to ecommerce have the best electronics and smartphones, etc. How can you create an ecosystem where content is available in tier 2-3 cities where it available as per their convenience? That is a big area of possibility here.

2.    Second, I see new platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and maybe some other platform developed in India, they will become a platform for the launch of new products in creativity. The business model will change. For this I see enormous potential.

3.     Third would be funding would be more democratic. If the internet is going to be the future we the government value the internet to be democratic, plural, and representing the diversity of India.

4.    The internet should not be abused by anyone. The eluding threat of terrorism is something which cannot be allowed in India.

“Policy intervention is needed and we promise we will do it as quickly as possible,” said Prasad.

“When 4G came out whoever sought 4G licenses as a minister I was quite clear I will give permission to all. Let there be competition. Let the best services have the biggest consumers. I am very happy that Mr Ambani has become a part of this. As a minister, I say let there be fair and reasonable competition where quality of service becomes the definer,” he added.

“With regards to policy changes, I am open to consider policy changes in IT and Telecom sector at any time,” he said.

Prasad said, “Let me convey at the outset of clear commitment of this government that we respect and value this industry and whatever policy initiative is needed for the growth of the industry shall be most forthcoming to doing as quickly as possible.”

Prasad at the end also spoke on television ratings system said, “Television ranking (rating) must become more fair and responsible. I was not impressed with TAM, I am not impressed with by the alternative too (BARC). How can a few thousand boxes determine what India is watching. There must be an improvement here.
