Head honchoes of certain leading global carmakers are expected to give the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo 2016 a miss, a Business Standard report says.

The Delhi Auto Expo, touted as one of the largest automobile expos in the world, in terms of footfalls, at least, is considered to be an important event of the year for company heads to unveil new products and introduce new technology. Given the sheer amount of media coverage and crowds that the event draws, it's considered an important platform for carmakers.

This year Mary Barra, CEO, General Motors, along with Carlos Ghosn from Renault-Nissan is expected to give the five-day event a miss. The Business Standard report says that Barra has already made three trips to India in the last one year alone while Ghosn has made several trips to India recently.

Nonetheless, the General Motors stall will have the Corvette and the Camaro as showstoppers, while the company will be unveiling a completely new Chevrolet, the company has said. The GM stall will also have the Colorado pick-up truck and the recently-launched Trailblazer and the new Cruze.

The Nissan stall will house limited editions of the Terrano and the Micra, and even showcase its EPORO robots technology.

While Osamu Suzuki, Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, will remain absent at the event taking place in in Greater Noida, Delhi NCR, his son Toshihiro Suzuki is expected to attend.

Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars is expected to give the event a miss too. Volkswagen has been grappling with the diesel cars emission scandal that uncovered in the US but soon spread to several countries, including various carmakers under the Volkswagen Group. However, Volkswagen is slated to showcase the most powerful Polo GTI at the show. VW is also expected to reveal a completely new compact sedan, the Ameo, at the expo.

Apart from this, the Business Standard report also says that a lack of significant new product launches or corporate announcements is also the reason some top men are missing the expo this year. The automobile industry in India has been witnessing a slowdown for a couple of months, mostly on the back of a very poor monsoon which thwarted rural demand. A drop in the number of product launches or announcements can be attributed to the fall in demand.

However, there still are quite a few interesting product unveils and launches lined up for the Delhi Auto Expo this year. Ford will be showing the iconic Mustang, which it is soon going to get to Indian shores, and with several other two-wheeler and bike launches, it will be business as usual at the expo.
