Workaholic young India has no time to sing, dance or laugh: Study

A recent study reveals that 77% Indians between the age group of 25-30 years are too busy to socialise and indulge in their hobbies.

Case one: 26-year-old corporate professional Pratik Udeshi works 18 hours a day and travels to different parts of the world every alternate week. He finds little time to catch up with friends and family. “As they say, if you are seeing your boss more than your family, you are on the road to success. Accelerated career paths come at a cost. Where is the time for family, friends or even myself?” he asks.

Case two: 26-year-old Rudhira Mitra was working at a search engine company till she found her calling. Self-employed, she now works with her close friend on hand-made products. “When I decided to convert my hobby into a business, I was excited. But sometimes I do get caught between demands and deadlines,” she says.

A recent study reveals that 77% Indians between the age group of 25-30 years are too busy to socialise and indulge in their hobbies. The survey by Global Monitor Study, done in association with TNS India, and subscribed by Bacardi India, revealed that rising urbanisation is leading to a change in the lifestyles of the urban youth and a lack of ‘human connection’. With Indians having the longest work hours at 56 hours a week, most don’t even find the time to let their hair down.

Actress Shazahn Padamsee doesn’t mind her busy life though: “I love what I do and I don’t like idling around. I think being busy is a good thing rather than saying today’s generation is lazy.”

Daily commute, deadlines, competition at work come into play on the path to success. Dr Hemant Mittal, behavioural expert, says, “The 25-30 age group is one of complete transition. The psychological need to ‘prove-to-the world I am an adult’ is replaced by the need of ‘integration into the society as a successful adult’. But it’s important to take some time off to enjoy life.”
