Gone are the days when flair bartending and flambéed food were all it took to enthrall guests at social soirees, for these dos nowadays are spiked with a lot more pizzazz.

Want a night of mystery and charm? Go for the Arabian Nights or Kashmir Dal Lake theme. For some adventure get a Vegas-style casino into your den or just bring on the spooks with a Halloween night. It may cost a bundle but that’s what folks want.

Ask Achint Nag of Krayonz Entertainment who has been in the business for almost 16 years, and he tells you he gets at least ten callers enquiring after his Casino Royale theme. “Costs a lakh-and-a-half at least, as we get them the ‘real’ effect — with card tables, blackjacks, shimmering spades and diamond cut-outs, tunnels at the entrance of the home and professional staff too,” he says, adding, “I have a team of art directors and we constantly brainstorm to create new ideas.”

A home party with the works may not be as easy as having one in a banquet hall but it does have its advantages.

Like Meghna Chitalia of Party Planet explains, “Getting a theme together at someone’s home is hard work; we just did a Wild, Wild West theme with cowboy outfits, guns, scarves etc, as well as a Hawaaiian Tropic party with fluorescent congo beds and large palm trees and more. However, I’d say cost -wise these parties are cheaper, more private and you don’t have to worry about licenses and music deadlines so more people are opting for them.”
For Sneha Tejwani and Dipa Sheth of Occasionz Unlimited, the fun of planning such a party lies in the challenge of fitting in the right decor and presentation into a small space. “We recently brought the Dal lake into someone’s living room — it had traditional purple crocus flowers, a landscape and embroidered carpets — as authentic as possible,” she laughs, adding, “I have to say the One Night in Bangkok theme is also all the rage now. It’s a red and black theme — very exotic with lots of gold, Chinese lanterns, flowers and bamboos.

Kunal Mehta, a DJ and party planner, says while Halloween takes place in November, there was a bigger demand for the theme in December. “At least six parties for it as compared to two in the previous month. People love to get spooked with limbo artistes, the whole glow-in-the-dark skulls, bones, webs and other creepy stuff; turns their home into something else,” he grins.
