US singer Bruno Mars rockets to UK chart double

The Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundown, said Mars was the first male solo act to achieve the chart double since British singer-songwriter Mika in 2007.

US singer Bruno Mars toasted a double success on Sunday when his debut album reached the top of the British pop charts while his ballad "Grenade" remained the best-selling single for a second week.

The Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundown, said Mars was the first male solo act to achieve the chart double since British singer-songwriter Mika in 2007.       

Mars's album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" went straight to the top in its first week, pushing Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna's "Loud" down to second place.     

"Ritual", by the British rock band White Lies, was a new entry at number three.       

On the singles chart, Mars denied British singer Adele her first number one with her new single "Rolling in the Deep". Like her best-known hit "Chasing Pavements", it only managed to reach the second spot.

Other new entries included London rapper Wretch 32 at number five with "Traktor" and Britney Spears at number six with "Hold It Against Me
