Art Basel in Miami is considered one of the biggest art fairs in the world. This year, about 250 to 300 galleries participated in the fair and among these were three Indian galleries as well. DNA gets a look into what the Indian galleries offered at this coveted international art platform.

Nature Morte in association with gallery Bose Pacia showcased the works of Aditya Pande, Suhasini Kejriwal and Radhika Khimji. Peter Nagy says, “The section of the fair that we are in (Art Nova) dictates that we have to show only three artists that have something in common. All three artists are approaching painting from the perspective of new strategies and techniques, such as collage, digital media and installation.”

While Chemould Prescott Road showcased the works of Pakistani artist Rashid Rana, Gallery Ske from Bangalore showed the works of artists Sudarshan Shetty and Avinash Veeraraghavan.

The aim of each gallery is to win more clients and get more exposure for their artists. Peter Nagy’s Nature Morte has been participating in Art Basel, Miami, since 2006. He confirms, “The aim of participating in the fair is to find new clients for the artists we are representing, but it’s also about meeting critics, curators and other galleries that might be interested in the artists we are working with and Indian art in general.”

Rebecca Davis from Bose Pacia adds, “While talking to dealers and collectors in advance of the fair I can say that there is a noticeably more positive and active collective feeling about the art market. In walking through the installations you can see that galleries are bringing back some more challenging and risky artworks which are always a sign of increased confidence in the strength of the market. We look forward to the rest of the week when we will be able to have more conversations with new and existing collectors, critics, curators, and artists.”

Aarti Shridhar from gallery Ske believes that this is a very prestigious fair to be a part of as well.
