It’s incredible to see how tattoos have slithered their way — from the usual body areas like arms, legs, thighs, wrists or naval — straight up to the lips. Fancy lip tattoos are the latest fad in town.

Popular patterns
Pink is the hot favourite of the season. It is often teamed with polka dots and fishnet patterns. “People are getting more and more experimental,” asserts tattoo artist Sameer Patange. “They aren’t shy to take to glitter either.” In fact, whacky and funky designs are what most people prefer to get printed on their lips.

How to choose your style?
Mild tattoos are what sell the most. Says Sameer, “On facial areas, sleek designs suit the best. Most patterns for lip tattoos are adopted from tribal art form and fall under Maori tattoos.”

Colour-wise
One needs to be wary of his/her skin tone and colour before opting for any tattoo. In such cases, asking the tattoo artist for his suggestion would be a wise thing to do. Often, people with dark lips come to these studios for getting their lips lightened. “It is a kind of cosmetic tattooing,” explains Sameer. “Clients generally rely on the artist for choosing the right colour. We also suggest to our clients as to what will suit them and what won’t.”

Precautions
Once you get a lip tattoo done, it is recommended that you take a liquid diet. Minimal movements of the muscles are preferred. Avoid making the lips wet. Use a straw even for drinking water. Applying edible ointments like glycerine or calendula will help the tattoo last long.

“One shouldn’t be drinking hot tea or coffee without a straw either. Also, one shouldn’t use heavy make up on the lips,” says tattoo artist Arun Ronald, of Al’s tattoo parlour.

Is it long-lasting?
Lips are a sensitive area and since one is constantly eating, talking, etc, the tattoos may wear off sooner. A temporary lip tattoo lasts for a good seven to eight months depending upon the expertise of the tattoo artist.
