With Raksha Bandhan round the corner, attractive and colourful rakhis have flooded the markets everywhere. But, many sisters are opting to buy somewhat different rakhis, the ones made of gold and studded with diamonds or gemstones.

Expensive rakhis, running into several thousands of rupees,
seem to have become a rage among sisters in Gujarat this year, as more and more women are opting for such rakhis to express love towards their brothers.

According to jewellers, the simplest of gold rakhis start from around Rs 5,000, while diamond-studded rakhis start from Rs 10,000-15,000, and can go up to many times more, depending on the quantity of gold or precious stones used in their making.

"Relationships are not measured by money. I used to buy simple rakhis till now, but I have chosen a diamond rakhi this year to express my love for my brother. The best part is he can continue using this rakhi even as a bracelet, post completion of the festival," said Dipti Mehta, a resident of Gurukul.

The high-end rakhis are made only on order, and in spite of high gold prices, jewellers said that, the order flow this year has been good.

"Rakhis made out of silver or gold have been in vogue for quite some time, but the trend of diamond studded rakhis is now catching up.  Rakhis studded with diamonds or kundan are very popular among the rich class this Raksha Bandhan," said Tushar Choksi, a leading jeweller in Surat.

Choksi said that, they have sold a number of expensive rakhis, costing Rs 10,000 and more, in the last few days, and expect to sell a few more before the festival.

Pinky Soni, a city-based jewellery trader, said, "There is good demand for gold and diamond rakhis on occasion of Raksha Bandhan this year. Many people are approaching jewellers to make rakhis of their choice to make the festival a special occasion."
