Business honcho Harsh Goenka’s interest in art dates back to his childhood days in Kolkata, and since then, this art enthusiast has been collecting countless art pieces from all across the globe. The art aficionado has now organised a unique art show titled Of Gods and Godesses, Cinema, Cricket, an eclectic mix of artworks by several artists. “The fabric of religion, cinema and cricket truly binds the collective consciousness of the nation,” states Harsh.

The industrialist feels that his arty influences have also been extended to his entire family — wife Mala, daughter Vasundhara and son Anant. “Their involvement in art is relatively passive though,” he says. The business tycoon has an eclectic collection of artwork in his office. “I can’t have them all at home, you see, my wife (Mala) doesn’t let me keep the clutter,” he laughs. “I have acquired my taste in art from my husband. Though I’m not an active participant, I do appreciate art,” admits Mala Goenka.

Talking about the global and Indian art scene, Harsh says, “China has surpassed us not only in economy but in art world as well.” Though he is a great lover of Indian art, Harsh feels that the art emerging in China and many other countries are better than that of India.

Early this month also witnessed the 18th season of the Art Camp — an annual, week-long art exhibition held at his beach house in Marve, marked by an array of works by 20 artists from India and abroad.

Harsh does not have a favourite artist as such. “My taste as an art collector has changed over the period. Earlier, I used to pick a painting going by the look of it, now I select artworks in a more mature way. I let the art sink in and then interpret it,” the biz honcho concludes.
