Khayal singers Rajan and Sajan Mishra will light up the stage on the first day of the two-day Mumbai Sanskriti Festival to be held this weekend. And tabla maestro Zakir Hussain will follow it up on the second day.

Artistes like Ustad Rashid Khan, percussionist Sivamani, pianist Louis Banks, young sitar maestro Niladri Kumar and child prodigy kanjira player V Selvaganesh had performed at the event last year.

The festival has been conceived as an annual cultural event by the
Indian Heritage Society last year with an aim to promote Mumbai’s culture through classical music. This year Rajan and Sajan Mishra are excited to light up the Asiatic Library steps with their khayal-style Hindustani classical performance.

The duo’s last album was Kulsampada and the pair plans to perform some songs from this album at the event.

The two who have received their musical training from their grandfather Bade Ram Das Ji Mishra, their father Hanuman Prasad Mishra and their uncle, sarangi virtuoso Gopal Prasad Mishra, are now excited that their kids are getting prepared for the big stage. “In our last album my sons Ritesh and Rajneesh also performed with us. And I am looking forward to doing more performances with them,” says Rajan Mishra.

The duo is also going to be a part of the 2,000 voices event with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s special event to be held in Pune next week. The two did their first concert abroad in 1978 and they have performed in the country for almost 40 years. The Mishra’s feel that the number of youngsters attending classical concerts has gone up.

“Classical music has a huge fan following in India and abroad unlike popular perception. But yes, it’s encouraging to see more youngsters come to the concerts,” says Rajan.
