Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin came to the defense of Donald Trump saying that the press is treating him "unfairly" by focusing mostly on his doubts about President Barack Obama's birthplace.

Palin said Trump is not pushing the birther issue and would talk about more substantial issues, if only the press allows him.

She said that reporters are hammering Trump about Obama's birth certificate issue, the one issue that he has brought up without being shy.

"He's answering reporters' questions about his view on the birth certificate. And reporters turn that around and say that's all he's got," the Politico quoted Palin, as saying.

"Trump is running on the issue, bottom line, that President Obama is in so far over his head," she added.

Palin did not answer on whether she thinks Trump is right or wrong in doubting the President's birthplace. But she voiced her support for his idea of taking up the issue.

When asked how close she is to making her own decision about a White House bid, Palin said it was "still too early" and that forming an exploratory committee "isn't even on the radar."

"I've never really run for anything conventionally over the last couple of decades. I've jumped in and done it when I've known that it is the right thing," said Palin.
