The show has been organised by Bal Kalyan Sanstha & Ability Unlimited Foundation.
Bal Kalyan Sanstha, in collaboration with Ability Unlimited Foundation, New Delhi, will perform ‘Ramayana on wheels’ on the premises of Bal Kalyan Sanstha on Sunday. The show will be executed under the leadership of Syed Sallauddin Pasha, who has dedicated his life in bringing smiles to these innocent souls. He has pioneered Indian therapeutic theatre in the past 25 years.
About 200 differently-abled children will perform in open air. The show will include 18 scenes and more than 60 characters of the great epic.
“I had seen a similar show in Delhi during a visit. We wanted to create the same magic in Maharashtra. We are practicing for this show since March and we started preparing for the costumes and jewellery two months ago. Everything, from costumes to decorative items, is done by our students and staff,’’ said manager of Bal Kalyan Sanstha, Minetta Paatil.
There are 16 special schools from the city who are participating in this mega show. Ayodhya School in Wanavdi, Red Cross school, Kamayani School for Handicapped in Nigdi, Poona Blind School in Koregaon Park are some of the schools whose children will showcase their acting skills.
“We wish to change the apathetic attitude of society towards the disabled and view them in a new light. Many of our students will be able to find work after this exercise, which will establish them on par with other mainstream individuals of their age,’’ added Paatil.
Every year, Bal Kalyan Sanstha conceives special programmes on December 3 as part of ‘World Disabled Day’ to sensitise and educate people at large about various issues concerning the disabled.
Says Pasha, “I feel these children are not disabled. They are just differently-abled. Dance and music is a healing tool to bring out the creative skills in them. The moment we think they are disabled, a huge wall is created between us and them.”
Noting that there are around 70 million disabled children in India, Pasha insists, “All they need is love, care and motivation to survive.”
