Steven Kapur seems like an ordinary man offstage. But once there, Steven, alias Apache Indian can set a high voltage groove!

The reggae artist, who introduced his original bhangramuffin music in the 90s, became everyone’s favorite with the track Boom Shack-a-lak, something that he “never expected to become such a chartbuster”. The track was later picked up by many commercials and Hollywood movies too.

Apache performed in Mumbai last week and was here with his son Kevin. The two were even featured on the show Taka Tak Mumbai.

Like father like son — Kevin too vests interest in music. “Ours is a music family, though his (Kevin’s) style of music is totally different than mine.”

“I want to make a movie on Apache,” says Steven who seems to be clearly smitten with Bollywood. “The script for the film is in place already. I am in talks with some directors from Bollywood too…hopefully things will shape up very soon,” he adds.

While Apache can rap in Punjabi, Kevin is struggling hard with the language. “I can barely understand Punjabi. This is the second time I’m visiting India since I was eight,” he says coyly.

Strangely, everyone in the family has their own personal taste in music. While Apache still listens to Mohammed Rafi, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar; son Kevin holds a liking for the British pop, club music and his daughter, is an adept guitarist.

Apache’s last performance in Mumbai was for the Dharavi residents in 2009. The gruff-voiced-singer has a multitude of awards to his credit, and has collaborated with eminent artists like Boy George, Boyz II Men, Asha Bhosle, A.R. Rahman, etc.

His next album Music Is Freedom will be launched in India in October. Meanwhile, he is in the process of opening a bar in Mumbai and New Delhi. “I want it to be at someplace in Juhu!” So will we get to see the father and son performing together in the bar soon? “Of course, very soon,” he promises.
