Sri Bhagavan and Amma heads of the Oneness University of spiritualists hold that the mission of each human being is to achieve higher spiritual states of consciousness and then pass on these healing states to other people.

Crystal ball reader and psychic Larra Shah agrees, “The purpose of a human being’s life — and we’re all here for our own unique purpose — to learn, experience and evolve. Each of us has different learnings to undergo in the process of living the situations. I realised what my purpose in life was quite early — and it is to help other people evolve, identify their soul blockages and give them gentle reminders about the direction they should be taking in life.”

Eckhart Tolle, author of A New Earth: Awaken to your Life’s Purpose, believes that the primary purpose of every human being is to be fully engaged in the flow of the moment and to be aligned with the natural flow of reality itself. That would probably stir a chord within gallery owner Bina Aziz, who relishes her role as mother, wife and confidante of her friends. “My reason for being alive is to be a good mother to my kids, a supportive wife to my husband, to promote artistic talent in my community. I aim to spread happiness among my family and friends,” she says.

Daisaku Ikeda, head of a worldwide Buddhist organisation of lay believers, believes that each person born on earth has a unique life’s mission that only he or she can fulfil. Buddhist and Ikeda follower Priyasri Patodia holds that her mission is to achieve an inner transformation and to help lesser privileged children through teaching them at school. Says Priyasri, “I was always a seeker. I always felt that there was some dimension ‘missing’ in my life until I discovered Buddhism, which helped awaken me to my potentialities.”

Says Larra, ‘Early on in life I had a vision about what I was meant to do in life. When I help someone else, it gives me a deep sense of fulfilment.” Aziz says that everyone has a mission: “For those who don’t have children, for example, it might well be their mission to bring happiness to another  child by adopting him or her.”

Priyasri says that ever since she discovered her mission in life, she stopped feeling sorry for herself. “Life became simpler once I aligned myself with the larger mission of reaching out to others.  In fact, it feels as if I’ve just had a very satisfying meal.”
