As we await the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, designers, wedding planners and event managers on our desi turf are pulling up their socks for the wedding season here.

The ongoing wedding fair in the city, Shehnai 2011, a two-day long event, highlights the major wedding themes while predicting the bizarre elements we are likely to see in the next season. The fair opened with a fashion show by Falguni and Shane Peacock and has a host of wedding planners, make-up artists, florists, interior designers to help one plan the big day.

“Indian weddings are getting more lavish and extravagant. People now plan their weddings  almost a year and a half before,” points out celebrity wedding planner Gurleen M Puri. “Everyone’s looking for an offbeat taste in terms of the destination, decor and designs.” Well, Gul Panag’s wedding was an apt example... with the baraat entering riding Bullets!

Wedding planner Rachana Lucknowala recalls, “I did the wedding for a Marwari couple who wanted a Catholic wedding; and took vows for each other in front of their friends and family.” Clearly, the want for bizarre is not just restricted to clothing and destinations anymore. She remarks that the bride and the groom no longer want to pick something from the planner’s portfolio, but clearly know how they want their wedding to be like.

“Sometimes the guy wants to drop in as a Shehenshah, or make a dramatic entry with an array of belly dancers, or pop up from a revolving stage. A bride once told me she wanted to come in a vintage car right up to the stage,” recollects Rachna.

Faiek El Sadaani, food and beverage director at a five star hotel in the city, “Indians love their Indian food, though they might have an additional menu for international guests.”
