Taking the earn-while-you-learn theory seriously are two Bangalore-based NIFT students, Nikita Dawar and Nivedha Charles, who are in the third year of college. They have not only turned hair accessory designers but have also managed to gain a fair share of clientele along the way. Giving an insight into the genesis of their now popular brand Pigtails and Ponys, Nikita says, “As customers we found hair accessories to be expensive and limited in India. We saw this market situation as an opportunity to exhibit our talent and ideas and started designing hair accessories.”

The brand today offers hair clips, rubber bands, extensions, comb clips and wreaths. “We are thinking of bringing hair products, combs and brushes under our fold too. But as of now we are concentrating on introducing new themes into our collection,” adds Nikita. The designer duo usually launch their new collections during important festivals. “After doing the Deepavali and Christmas collections, we are now working on the Holi range. A braided collection is the other thing that we are planning this season,” says Nikita. Their Blossoms and Bows collection is however available through the year. Products in this range go well with both Indian and Western outfits and thus, are a huge hit with both college and office goers. Lace, recycled paper, buttons, coconut shell, solar wood paper and fabric sourced from Raja Market and their old clothes are the raw materials for all their collections.

“Our’s is a fun and happy brand. We are trying to make people’s hair look stylish and that too without them having to go to beauty parlours. Expensive hair dos and harmful chemical treatments are not the only way out. A floral hair band or a clip can also make you look chic,” says Nikita. Look for Pigtails and Ponys products on Facebook. They are priced between Rs`100 and Rs300.

Nikita’s style tip
Pull out the bow on your old pair of shoes before discarding it and stick it to your hair band to give it a make over. Beads from a broken necklace can also be stuck on either sides of a plain band to give it a new look. Patchwork on your mother’s old sari can also be cut and run around a band to make it look different.
