Picking up the right gift can be quite a brain racking exercise! Not because you are spoilt or strapped for choices, but because you feel it important to make your gift likable, customised and at the same time make a statement too. So here’s something that ensures all of the above - food for gift!

Gifting a meal is the new trend that’s becoming a hit in the city. And we aren’t counting in chocolates or cup cakes. “It’s quite a popular choice,” says Aditi Talreja, owner of an online gourmet store.  “I’d never imagined that gifting food would become such a hit. Even as a part of my business strategy I never looked into it…it totally surprised me,” she exclaims.

Even though the site delivers only within Mumbai, people from several parts of the country can place an order. “We once had a mother calling us up to have the food delivered to her son (in Mumbai) on his birthday. She asked for Uttapam for breakfast, Indian for lunch, and continental for dinner…and also some dough-nuts,” says Aditi, citing a reference. “We also have people ordering food for their friends staying far off or even in the next building itself!”

Dissecting the reasons for this trend, we find many. “Food is a very big part of our culture,” Aditi explains. “There’s also a touch of customisation in terms of messages or accompaniments.” She recollects that a girl from Chandigarh, who wanted to gift a pizza to her boyfriend and requested to attach a rose too.

Says Arzan Daruwala, managing director of a resort, “Mumbai is a trendy city… gifting food is something which has come up only in the last one year.” He adds, “It sells because it’s special and personal. People walk in asking for food vouchers to gift their parents/friends and we customise menu accordingly.”

However, the trend is more popular amongst corporates than in the family circuit, feels Varun Kapur, managing director of a popular restaurant. “For instance a boss prefers gifting a meal to an employee as a reward; but families generally prefer going out and dining together,” he explains.
