Within two years of her showing at Lakme Fashion Week, young designer Masaba Gupta has been successful in making an impact in the fashion scene with her quirky and bold, yet feminine drapes and silhouettes. Gupta is a refreshing change as she prefers organic fabrics enhancing them with classic weaves, patchwork and vibrant colours.

Talking about her collection that will be showcased today at LFW, she says, “My collection is called ‘Straight from my soil’ — it is inspired by the Masai tribes of Tanzania. I will be using bright colours, but less patchwork (signature style). I am going for colour blocking technique with a new fabric which is a mix of ikat and silk. I will have more of western silhouettes and a few sarees. I have also designed headgear and wedges (shoes) for my line for the first time.”

Though Gupta’s designs are quirky and bold, they do have a strong Bengali feel. She says, “You won’t believe that I went to Kolkata just last year for the first time. Many people ask me if I am Bengali, I am an Afro girl (laughs). But it isn’t deliberate. It just happened, may be because dad is really loved in Kolkata and mom has done a few Bengali films. May be it’s some past life connection.”

Gupta  is upset with the recent hike in excise duty for designer outfits. “For young designers like me the financial aspect of starting a career in fashion is the problem, as it needs huge investment. Instead of giving us a levy on taxes, they are adding to the burden. For beginners it’s a big loss at the very start of their career,” she quips.

Neena Gupta’s daughter couldn’t resist anymore and is ready to try her hand in movies, “I want to start concentrating on styling for movies this year. I have just done a Bengali film and I loved it. It is a new challenge to create a look for the actors as per the scene. It’s fun. I am in talks with a few directors for the same. So I will cut down on participating in fashion weeks too,” she concludes.
