The mindset of the youth today is probably far different from that of the young, around a decade or two back. There are many characteristics that set them apart and the zest to start working early, in a professional set up, is one such trait. But the side effect of this vigour is that a large chunk of such driven youngsters feel burnt out within just a decade of having started out. And chances are that they are only 25 or 30 years of age when exhaustion strikes. Sounds like your story? Well, at least you’re not alone!

A few days back, fashion designer Masaba Gupta took to Twitter, expressing her worn-out state of mind. The 22-year-old said that she wished she had started working a few years later. Early realisation, shall we say?

28-year-old Wilson D’Souza feels it’s time for him to quit his dream job and take a year-long vacation, before getting back to the grind. Why? “Because I’ve been working for 12 years now! I used to intern at my dad’s office when I was 16. That went on for four years. Then I took up a full time job with a corporate house and pursued an online MBA degree. My goal was to soak in as much experience as I could, so that by the time I was 30, I’d be fit to head an entire department,” says Wilson, who misses being the guy with no  worries.

Actor Taaha Shah, who made his debut with a Yash Chopra flick, Luv Ka The End, is all of 23 and can only think of building a career at this point. “I do feel the burns, but only because I think I didn’t start early enough. I’m following my passion. For me, my work is my true love and it gives me a lot of peace and joy,” says Taaha, who is in favour of youngsters doing something meaningful instead of willing away their time.

Clinical psychologist Hemant Mittal says that while starting out early works for some, it doesn’t for most. “The medical term for burnt out is chronic fatigue syndrome and it is very common today. It doesn’t happen because of the work that one is doing but because of other factors they have to deal with along with that. A young working person will also have some family issues, friends to please and other problems. So being exposed to all these at an early age can really get to some people,” says Hemant.

Though Hemant says that the decision to work at an early age is a personal choice, one should be aware of the signs of a burn-out. “The earliest signs are body pain and low immunity. Taking a break or a hobby help in such cases,” he says.
