General manager of Grand Mercure, Hament Rai, and partner of Sunshine’s Garden Boutique, Veena Nanda, want today’s generation to make nature a part of their lives...

Veena Nanda: There is so much of greenery here (at Grand Mercure) and that makes this property so beautiful. However, using greenery on large scale properties like this is a relatively a new concept for our country. I’ve been trying to convince people to blend nature and living for the longest of time.

Hament Rai:
I agree. When I came here, we were keen on creating a green space. I believe in the fact that doing small things will make a big difference and that’s the reason why we enhanced this place. Though, it’s a new concept, few properties in the city are trying to bring in as much greenery as possible. A green certification has become very important to them and they are willing to spend.

V: Yes, it’s true. But sadly, people perceive greenery to be only about planting and watering, which is not true. A lot of work goes into it. I’ve seen several people picking up plants but have no clue about maintaining them. When they see traces of undesired results, they dump it saying it was a waste of time.

H:
Gardening involves a lot of work. Maybe it’s a lazy mentality that people have. As a kid, I remember how much importance was given to landscape and gardening. After the evolution of technology, everything has changed!
V: It’s true. Life has become monotonous after the evolution of computers. It’s sad to see people sticking to their computers and giving preference only to work. There is so much more one can do about plants. However, there still are a some people who use plants creatively and blend it with the overall theme of their home.

H:
You also conduct workshops right? How has the response been? Do you think the current generation is interested in such things?
V: I’ve been conducting workshops for several years. I was a little surprised to see a lot of men getting involved in such things these days, which was not the case earlier. I also find a lot of children getting enthusiastic about plants, which is a good sign. I would really appreciate if parents also cultivate this habit in children and encourage them to make nature a part of their lives.
