"All my excitement has gone to the toes,” says designer Michelle Salins, who is currently readying her collection, and of course herself, for the upcoming season of New York Fashion Week.

In fact, the designer is so busy that she’s had very little time to take pride in this massive opportunity. “I just applied to participate at the Fashion Week, knowing that there is very little chance for me to make it. So when they wrote back with their approval that stated that I was going to showcase my collection as part of their emerging designers’ category, I was delighted,” says Michelle.

The Fashion Week, which takes on during the first week of September 2011, will see Michelle showcase her Spring-Summer 2012 collection and this time around, there’s going to be no bridal wear, something the designer is known for.

“I have chosen tulips and music as my theme for the collection and there’s going to be lots of dresses, tops and trousers, skirts on the ramp,” she says.

Amazed by how New York is flooded with different kinds of tulips in spring, Michelle wanted to create some sort of a connection with her memories in New York last spring. “And music because it’s sort of part of my DNA,” Michelle adds.

Incidentally, Michelle is also experimenting with something new this season. “I am using a lot of silk that I am getting woven especially for the collection and am even creating my own patterns for digital printing on fabrics as well. It’s a first for me!” says the designer.

Talking about the whole process of being part of NYFW 2011, Michelle says she was mighty impressed with the level of professionalism. The designer will showcase anything from 20 to 34 outfits at the show but not before finalising the models. “NYFW makes you get your own models, so I am currently liaising with agencies abroad to finalise them. That, and the clothes — it’s insanely busy!” she signs off. And for those who identify Michelle Salins with all her butterflies needn’t be disheartened; the designer is using at least one butterfly on her collection, just for kicks!
