While mixing florals with stripes or clashing houndstooth with herringbone prints is a common menswear pattern play, this season, designers went all out and served a manic mash-up of bold colours, raucous prints, frenzied fonts, etc. Design houses like Versace, Louis Vuitton, Marni and Prada indulged in a bombastic bacchanal of vibrant prints, crazy colours and textures in their Spring Summer 2019 offerings. While they look impossibly cool on the runways and ad campaigns, how does one pull off such statement-making ensembles on a day-today basis?

NEEDS THOUGHTFUL EXECUTION

Pattern clashing needs to be done very thoughtfully, in accordance with proportions. Sandeep Gonsalves, co-founder, SS Homme suggests, “Using neutral hats, chunky jewellery and accessories are one of the easiest ways to pull off an all-day pattern clash. Complementing the clash harmoniously, a checked overcoat is one of the most definite options you would require. A buffalo plaid shirt is inherently versatile and needs to be in your wardrobe in order to rock that pattern clash.”

BALANCE IT OUT

Perhaps it’s another way of luxury brands embracing the all-pervading high street vibe.

Designer Gaurav Khanijo says, “It’s a very high street vibe, would look amazing with solid coloured sneakers and other accessories, it gives a fresh, young, sporty inspired by the eighties feel to it. Be it the bold clashing patterns, camo prints or the dauntless geometric prints — I like them all, only if they’re balanced. I think the ramp representation is, of course, not the one we follow, but when you wear these pieces as separates, they look amazing. I’d love to have these prints on my joggers, and wear them as separates with solids.”

NOT MANY TAKERS IN INDIA

Indian men are seldom known to experiment with prints even though style adventurers like Ranveer Singh have shown how it’s done. Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “For India, I am not sure if this pattern clash is going to work, however, I do see a play of contrasting colours here.”
