Nail paint may not be a woman's domain anymore. Men have been slowly embracing painted tips and are taking to social media to show off their talons. Blame it on Marc Jacobs, who few months ago, started posting selfies of his varnished fingers with the hashtag #malepolish. And the hashtag has caught on with over 1,000 others doing the same. From goth shades of black and smoky gray to metallic tones like bronze and silver and even deep berry, mint green, hints of glitter — the variety is endless. In the past, there have been popstars and celebrities like David Bowie, Marilyn Manson and Jared Leto who've flaunted their manicures but it's still been a limited number.

Social media effect

Natasha Nischol, co-owner and co-founder of Fat Mu make-up academy says the hashtag #malepolish has become quite a rage in most parts of the world. "Many men are embracing the male polish trend and posting pictures on various social media sites, with Instagram as a dominant one. With the reach of social media it's hard to miss such a strong trend. It's tough to say if it will pick up in India as we do have fashion enthusiasts out here but due to the feminine aspects of nail polish, Indian men may not be open to the trend, but you never know. The funny thing about trends is they can be picked up overnight. And if it does pick up in India it's a winning situation for gender equality. I would suggest men go for deeper tones of berry. Grey would be a hit, most men might opt for black as well. Having said that, if a guy opts for hot pink, who are we to judge?"

Opt for strong colours

Cherag Bambboat, veteran make-up artist and founder, Magical Makeover Academy feels this won't really pick up here as there are a lot of social norms that Indians follow where stereotypes count a lot. "?I have an artist friend who used to always have black nail paint on his fingers. Generally men opt for stronger, more power oriented colours. Aside from this, men usually prefer to get regular manicures and pedicures done with no varnish."
