The rebellious mesh dress refuses to go off the runway and off the racks. This titillating see-through scorcher was seen on the runways of Balmain, Alexandre Vauthier, Saint Laurent and Gucci where literally nothing was left to the imagination. Should we blame its resurgence on Rihanna or designers itching to bring out products crying out for their Instagram debut? Kendall Jenner put the spotlight on the naked dress yet again by rocking a shimmery mesh mini at the Chopard Secret Night Party at Cannes Film Festival this year. Perversely covetable and laced with a mischievous undertone — the naked dress gets mixed reactions from our panel of style arbiters. Jewellery designer Queenie Singh shares, “Please note transparent trending means ‘thin body’ trending. Interesting to note how fashion governs body type too!” Obviously, one’s got to be fiercely confident to pull off these garments infused with a déshabillé panache. Over to the stylistas...

Not my thing: Queenie Singh

I have never been a person to wear transparent or sheer clothes. It’s not my thing, but if I ever sport sheer once in a way, then I don a silk slip under — a nude colour or the same shade as the outfit, whatever it calls for. That too looks good. It’s definitely not a pleasant sight to see rolls through your sheer. It’s meant to be a sexy ensemble.

Apt for Kardashians: Kalyani Saha

I don’t think we live in a country where one could exactly “free the nipple”. I doubt this is worn on a regular basis anywhere in the world unless you were one of the Kardashian sisters. Honestly, it’s only good for the ramp and fashion shoots. It’s not something that would be appreciated anywhere in the world no matter where you were.

Depends on your comfort level: Pria Kataaria Puri

I really like the transparent trend. In fact, I have been embracing this trend since about six months. It can be worn both casually and formally depending on your comfort level and the kind of outfit you plan to wear. One must choose the inner very carefully. It should look classy and chic and not vulgar.

It’s cool and sexy: Nandita Mahtani

I obviously can’t own it like the models on the runway, but it’s definitely a cool and sexy trend to embrace. A translucent silk black shirt is a no-brainer. I also love the idea of a netted fabric dress being styled with a simple silky slip dress in a pop of colour or bling, depending on the occasion.
