The Wikipedia defines Bohemianism as "the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people." In India, when one thinks of the 'bohemian style', one easily conjures up visions of Surily G's tasselled, mirror-worked dresses, Anupamaa's tribal-inflected ensembles, Shift's noodle-strap chevron print tunics and Ka-Sha's folksy vibrant ensembles. Are they just holiday clothes or a welcome respite from the formality of the stiff evening wear? Not really! There's much more to boho chic. It's a state of mind. A free-spirited soul exploration of the planet. A nomad, who's looking for Zen. A rule-breaker itching to crumble the cocoon of the daily grind and monotony. A magpie thumbing her nose at the never-ending rule-book of 'should-bes'. Here are four labels, which have epitomised boho in their own canvas and links them to a travel hot-spot.
It's more about a full set of wardrobe, a new lifestyle, the food you eat and places you're visiting. Say, a farmland than a seven-star hotel or a forest retreat.
He's glamping around but is not a junkie.
Boho to me is: You don't want to give it a thought. it's a state of mind. You can be boho even with your existing wardrobe. You can even create a cocktail look from your boho closet. You can be at a cocktail party and also at a pool side. Boho to me is a state of mind.
My boho is more glam. It's about sheen, beading, embroidery and the movement of tassels. I am very simple as a person and my clothes reflect how I would want my life to be.
Boho to me is: Fashion should be fun and you should invest in pieces which you can repeat and also bring an element of your personality to it and not just blindly copy. You should be able to mix and match.
As a label, we've been focused on trying to talk about India. It's also about the traveller. Travel opens up your mind and opens your heart. Also, my inspiration comes from a lot of people and cultures. Even though we're bound to our jobs and houses, that shouldn't stop us from exploring.
Boho to me is: A marriage of beautiful experiences. Being true to yourself. With your responsibilities, you can still bring in elements of yourself.
In Bohemian Manifesto: a Field Guide to Living on the Edge, author Laren Stover, breaks it down to five mind-sets...
Nouveau: with money, who attempt to join traditional bohemianism with contemporary culture
Gypsy: the expatriate types, they create their own Gypsy ideal of nirvana wherever they go
Beat: also drifters, but non-materialist and art-focused
Zen: "post-beat," focus on spirituality rather than art
Dandy: no money, but try to appear as if they have it by buying and displaying expensive or rare items – such as brands of alcohol
