Around 180 children having cochlear implants assembled at the Sushrut Auditorium of SMS Hospital on Wednesday in the presence of none other than Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Once unable to speak and suffering from hearing loss, some of them told their story in their own words while others performed dance, recited maths tables, vedic mantras and poems.

The experience was overwhelming for everyone in the auditorium with the Chief Minister terming the government’s support to the cochlear implant programme as the best work done by the government.

“For these 400 cochlear implants, Rs 25 crore was given from the CM’s relief fund. No other work by the government can be better than this as it has given a fresh lease of life to not only the children born with hearing loss but to their families as well,” said Raje.

A cochlear implant at SMS Hospital costs Rs 4.5-5.5 lakh. It includes surgery, medicines and speech therapy. Normally, patients get discharged after 2-3 days of the surgery and a kid who is born with hearing loss starts to speak after 1.5-2 years of the surgery.

“All the happiness of our life was gone when, three years ago, we came to know that our two-year-old daughter could not speak as she had profound hearing loss. Cochlear implant was not affordable for us but with the help of CM’s relief fund we are now able to hear our daughter speak,” said Prem Singh from Bayana of Bharatpur, whose daughter was able to undergo cochlear implant.

Apart from the four medical colleges, the facility will be extended to other medical colleges also. “So far, out of the total 489 cochlear implants, around 400 have been performed in Jaipur only.  But soon, this facility will be available in Kota and Ajmer Medical Colleges followed by Jhalawar Medical College,” Anand Kumar, secretary of medical education, said.
