The Jaipur chapter of Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has given suggestions to make the Secretariat and SMS Stadium buildings green, said Jaimni Uberoi, chairman, Jaipur IGBC. The council has also met various school principals to review the facilities available at schools and suggest ways to improve green footprints.

These suggestions were given after an intensive survey done about four months ago. The council is also in talks with the Government of Rajasthan to sign an MoU regarding the developments.

“There are no problems in the buildings, it is just the mind-set. The pointers given in the survey will help in 40 per cent water, 50 per cent of electricity saving, and reuse of sewage disposal,” Uberoi said.

“In the survey we have pointed out every heat island effects. The white colour on roofs makes heat islands, it absorbs the heat. We have suggested make them green areas. How to make good pavements and use of bicycles in the secretariat and stadium area. Why should person go from one building to another in a car. For stadium we have said, why should the sportsmen be smoking beside the labour class. There should be no smoking allowed,” Uberoi added.

While talking about the school surveys, Uberoi said that the principals were given a sheet of questionnaire to judge their knowledge and facilities available at the school regarding environment protection.

“I was surprised to know that schools already have 30 to 40 per cent facilities on their premises. We tell them what kind of light to use. We ask them to reuse the sewage water.

The pipelines can be divided into two parts. The water used for hand washing can be reused in the gardens and the excreta can be resused to make manure and gas for the canteen,” Uberoi said.

The chairman said that the extra cost of constructing a green building has also dropped drastically in the past 16 years. The cost is also recoverable in five to six years.

“When we started the green building movement in 2001, the cost of making it was 18 per cent more expensive than a regular building. Today, the cost is only two to three per cent higher. If one residential building is costing you Rs 1300 , it will cost you  Rs1300 plus 4 per cent to make it green, depending on the level you are planning to make,” Uberoi said.
