Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje will inaugurate an ambitious project to save the second big cat found in the state – the Leopard. The project Leopard will aim at bringing down the man-animal conflict in selected areas of the state while also in accordance with greater conservation to these felines. Interestingly, the forest department claims that the project is first of its kind to be launched by any state in India.

The inauguration of the project will be done at the Jhalana Leopard Reserve. “For the purpose of the project, eight sites have been identified and included. These sites are Jhalana Reserve, Kumbhalgarh reserve, Jaisamand, Mount Abu reserve, Sita Mata reserve, Shergarh (Barah) reserve, Khetri Baansiyal reserve and Jawai conservation reserve,” officials said.

The main focus under the project would be to end the human – animal conflicts of which there have been so many cases in the recent past wherein panthers have roamed out of the forest areas and into the human habitations causing chaos and also injuring people and animals at several occasions. “There are projects like Project Tiger, Project Elephant, Project Rhino in various areas of the nation, however, no project related to conservation of leopards has ever been launched in the nation. Thus, this is a special project that focuses on these rosetted felines. Habitat improvement will be one of the prime focus in the project,” officials said.

Interestingly, a sum of approximately Rs 25 crores would be kept separate for the project. “With the project, it will become a rule for any successive governments to look into this project as well. Not only will it develop more sites for tourism, but will also help in conserving the animals living outside designated national parks or sanctuaries. It will be a huge boost to the specie conservation,” officials said.
