The state government is in the process of filing an affidavit within three weeks in the Supreme Court on the issue of pollution from Rajasthan Roadways buses operating from Bikaner House near India Gate in New Delhi. The Supreme Court had asked the Rajasthan government to file an affidavit within three weeks in the matter.

The apex court ordered that if the State does not file an affidavit in three weeks, all buses originating from or terminating at Bikaner House, which is just 1 km from India Gate, will be restrained from operating with effect from April 1.

Sources said that if the state fails to satisfy the court, the Rajasthan Roadways may have to shift its operation from Bikaner House to Sarai Kale Khan from where other buses operate.

However, the sources also claim that this should not be the case as the buses which ply from Bikaner House are non-polluting luxury vehicles like Scania or Volvo which are certified with emission norms.

Moreover, these buses are running on the tourist permit just like any other tourist bus which carries tourists and passengers near India Gate for sightseeing. A source also claimed that Bikaner House is also not a bus stand but merely a pick up point for the passengers and thereafter buses do not stop in Delhi to pick passengers.

Notably, Rajasthan Roadways runs these very luxurious buses between Jaipur and Delhi every one hour from 5:30am till 12 midnight. These buses are very popular among the passengers and are a challenge to double-decker train which runs early morning from Jaipur to Delhi and Shatabdi Express which runs early morning from Delhi to Jaipur. The court is dealing with a PIL filed in 1985 by environmentalist M C Mehta who had raised the issue of air pollution in the Delhi-national capital region.
