Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot’s old team of Cabinet ministers and Parliamentary secretaries is back in the fold after the Congress scooped victory in Rajasthan on Tuesday. Almost all his ministers from the previous cabinet who contested the elections in 2018 have registered victory by a handsome margin and that too mostly against the BJP candidates.

Prominant among them are Mahendra Jeet Malviya (Bagidora), Pramod Jain Bhaya (Anta), Hemaram Choudhary (Gudamalani), Ramlal Jat (Mandal), Master Bhanwar Lal Meghwal (Sardar Shahar), Parsadi Lal Meena (Lalsot), Gurmeet Singh Kunnar (Karanpur), Dr Rajkumar Sharma (Nawarlgarh), Shanti Dhariwal (Kota North), Bharat Singh Kundarpur (Sangod), Rajendra Pareek (Sikar) and Dayaram Paramar (Kherwara) have won the election. They have all served Gehlot as ministers in his previous Cabinet.

Zahida Khan (Kaman) and Mamta Bhupesh (Sikrai), who served Gehlot government as parliamentary secretary have won the election while sitting Ajmer MP Raghu Sharma, who was Gehlot government’s chief whip, registered victory from Kekri Assembly constituency. Parasram Mordia, who was the chairman of Rajasthan Housing Board, has won election from Dhod seat by defeating Premaram. The former Assembly speaker Dipendra Singh Shekhawat also emerged victorious from Sri Madhopur seat. Congress, though  denied ticket to former minister in Gehlot Cabinet, Babulal Nagar and fought as an Independent and managed to win Dudu seat. It is likely that Nagar may comeback to Congress as he is a Gehlot loyalist.

At the time of ticket distribution, a few leaders within the Congress had raised objections on the candidature of some experienced hands, arguing that the senior leaders should be given a break and instead youths be given a chance to take the challenge of election battle.

However, Gehlot managed to get tickets for his ensemble of former ministers after he guaranteed their victory. And of these most have managed to secure a win, thereby putting a stamp on Gehlot’s political acumen.
