Opposition called these programmes an election stunt ahead of assembly polls in the State
Raje government is all set to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14 at grand level. The opposition, though, called such programmes mere tokenism and an election stunt as Rajasthan is to face election in the final quarter of the year.
The government has come up with an important programme with opening of Ambedkar Bhawan in each city of the desert state while celebrating birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar who was principal architect of Constitution of India and a revered figure among scheduled castes.
The order issued at the level of the chief secretary NC Goel says 190 cities out of 191 will witness foundation laying ceremonies of Ambedkar Bhawan and the concerned bodies have been instructed to ensure preparations for participation of the locals and their representatives. Besides, the top officials ordered the district collectors to hold camps to benefit specially abled people with government schemes on the occasion. “Ambedkar Jayanti is an annual festival observed on April 14 to commemorate the memory of social reformer Dr BR Ambedkar and hence the government decided to hold such programmes for the welfare of people, specially underprivileged,” said a senior official with the social justice department which is organising state-level programme on the occasion in the Birla Auditorium.
“CM Vasundhara Raje celebrating 127th birth anniversary of Ambedkar will dedicate a library and a conference hall in Jaipur. Also, prize distribution ceremony will be held,” added the official.
The Congress, though, has termed the preparations as tokenism and said that the government failed to protect rights of the scheduled castes.
“There is no issue with the government programmes to commemorate birth anniversary of Ambedkar. However, Raje government failed to control atrocities against the scheduled castes. It appears just a lip service on the birth anniversary of the social reformer,” said Suresh Choudhary, Congress spokesperson.
