In a letter written by Secretary of Rural Development department to all district collectors, he has expressed displeasure over the poor implementation of the PMAY(G) (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Grameen). He describes this poor performance as deplorable (‘Khedjank’). According to the letter, out of 2,50,037 approved houses in 2016-17, the second installment was not transferred to 49,586 houses and construction of only 30 per cent houses could be completed against the given target. While out the total target given in the year 2017-18, which is 2,23,629 and approval for 25,912 are still pending.

During the review, it was found that due to lack of interest and negligence of the officials, the progress of the scheme is badly affected. The department has ordered collectors for the timely review of the performance and to take strict action against the officials and employees who are not taking this scheme seriously. According to government data, 34,928 houses are pending because the order sheet of 34,928 couldn’t be generated at the block level and 12,721 houses are incomplete as the digital signatures of development officers couldn’t be uploaded online.

It is worth mentioning that DNA published a story on October 5, 2018, titled as ‘Dream Project PMAY(G) of power packed PM at snail’s pace in Rajasthan’. The big question that pops up here is that how this department will be able to cope up with this poor performance? How would the department of rural development be able to provide the necessities to the needy at an ‘affordable’ price and to give shelter to each family by 2022, the year when India complete its 75 years of independence. But till now, this dream seems far from reality. The year 2017 will be history in just few days and only five years will be left to the complete the task, which seems quite arduous for the government.
