Gujarat Dalit MLA Jignesh Mevani was stopped at Jaipur International Airport on Sunday and kept detained by local police for more than 4 hours. Mevani was scheduled to attend a programme on Ambedkar Jayanti at Merta road in Rajasthan's Nagaur district, but police informed him that the Nagaur administration restricted his visit and he was not allowed to enter Nagaur.
The scene started at 10 am in the morning when Mevani landed at the airport. "As I came out from the airport lobby, some policemen surrounded me and an officer with them, handed me a paper and made me to sign the letter saying MLA Jignesh Mevani's entry was restricted in entire Nagaur district of Rajasthan," Mevani told DNA later in the day. "After some time, the police officer said that I was not allowed to move around even in Jaipur. When I asked him about the orders, the officer said that he had such orders from 'higher authorities' to detain me," the Dalit leader said.
Police, on the other hand, denied reports of them detaining Mevani. "He was neither detained nor arrested. Kunwar Rashtradeep, DCP, Jaipur East, said. "We showed him Nagaur district administration's order." When asked about the restrictions in Jaipur, he said, "He was restricted from moving around in Jaipur because of the prohibitory order under section 144 of the CrPC which was in effect in the district after the violence during the Bharat bandh on March 2."
Mevani tweeted the incident to inform the media and public after being stopped at the airport. He also alleged that policemen entered in his car forcefully and continued to follow even after he was allowed to go to a friend's place.
