Naroda police detained a youth for allegedly staging his own kidnapping in a bid to implicate another youth who was in love with a girl once engaged to him.

Police sources said that Maulik Patel, 23, a resident of Luv-Kush bungalows, Nikol Road, Naroda was formally engaged to Jinisha Patel, 21, a resident of Krishna Nagar, Naroda 18 months ago.

However, the engagement was called off two months ago when the families came to know that Jinisha was in love with one Darshan Patel.

However, Maulik, an MBA student also loved Jinisha. After the break-up, he called Darshan and warned him to keep away from her, but to no avail. So, he hatched a plan to implicate Darshan in a fake kidnapping case.

He bought two new SIM cards and started making threat calls and SMSes on his mobile phone to convince his father that he was in danger.

On Thursday, Maulik called his father and said he was being chased by two cars. Initially, the father did not take the call seriously, but when he failed to return home till late night, he filed a complaint at Naroda police station.

However, on Friday morning, Maulik called his father again informing him that he had escaped from the hold of his kidnappers and was in Jaipur. But during interrogation, Maulik broke down and confessed of his crime.
