After getting widespread acclaim for providing exquisite infrastructure to the city, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has added one more feather to its cap. The civic body has developed the world's largest garden clock in the city that shows time with help of GPS and navigation system. Interestingly, the clock is completely designed and manufactured in India.

Built at a cost of Rs21 lakh, the clock has become the centre of attraction at Navin Chandra Mafatlal Garden in Bhestan. The clock is one of its kinds in India and SMC is planning to apply for a place for it in the Guinness Book of World Records. "This is the largest garden clock in the world,'' said KM Desai, SMC official in charge of the project.

The clock weighs 4,000kg and its diameter is 24 metre. To fix the clock, SMC has created a special structure on the ground, with lower end tilting downwards. Facing the sky, the clock has been beautified with help of imported grass and flowers. Rather than making it a show-piece, SMC has crafted a working clock, which shows time as per IST.

Designed and manufacture in Chennai, the clock works through GPS (global positioning system) and navigation system - connected with satellite. However, the giant time machine requires electricity and civic body has created a separate electric supply line, to provide continuous power to the clock. Another important feature of the clock is that it rings once after every 30 minutes and then rings according to hour - for example, it rings three times when it is 3 o'clock and so on.

"The land was donated by Mafatlal Group to SMC for developing an amusement park or recreational space for common people. As we had 93,000 sq. metre land, we decided to develop a garden with an unique attraction for people. The idea of preparing a giant clock was mooted and after working for 13 years, we were able to deliver something, which is first of its kind in India," a top civic official, said.

SMC inaugurated the giant clock during Swarnim Gujarat Celebrations. No entry fees have been kept by SMC for visiting the park and clock.
