Women gamblers, thieves held in Ahmedabad

Five women & two men held for betting; 2 other girls try to steal purse.

Gambling and stealing are the vices that are no longer associated with men alone. The female of the species also indulges in these age-old addictions, sometimes with the same fervour as her men counterparts.

This fact was borne out on Wednesday when women were at the heart of two cases in different police stations. Five of them were arrested for gambling, while two were taken in by the police for stealing in a busy market place.

The Sardarnagar police were astonished when they came upon a group of women busy gambling in the Panna-Paisa style. Panna-Paisa gambling is based on the numbers disclosed from various markets like Worli Matka and so on. The cops arrested five women and two men. from house number 7 of Neelkant Society near Kubernagar ITI.

The arrested women are Hema Devani, Sunita alias Maheswari Sindhi, Kavita Sindhi, Nilam Sindhi and Deepa Sindhi, while the two males arrested were Manu Sindhi and Haresh Sindhi.
"We got the information about a gambling den and we raided the house and found that women were involved in gambling," senior police inspector, Sardarnagar police station, DG Goswami told DNA. He further said that in several other raids in past too, women gamblers have been arrested from the area.

The den was operated by Hema Sindhi, while the other women had stepped into her house to play Panna-Paisa. The raid was conducted at around 10 pm on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, two women who attempted to steal the purse of a lady in the busy Dalgarwad area were caught by the Karanj police. According to sources, the two, Lata Subhashbhai Charra and Gunwanti Charra, attempted to steal the purse of one Manisha Amin, a resident of Navrangpura area who was out shopping.
The pair were about to make their move when Amin spotted Lata zipping up her purse. She started shouting and caught Lata by her hands. Following this, vigilant citizens nabbed the thief and handed her over to the Karanj police.

Lata's accomplice Gunwanti, who attempted to escape with two small purses of Amin, was also nabbed by the police, later.
Amin said, "I noticed that one of them was zipping up my purse after which I raised an alarm. Although one of the accused was caught, her counterpart who had escaped with two of my purses was nabbed after a trap was set for her." Investigating officer of the case, BS Damor of Karanj police, said that the two have been booked for theft and sent to judicial custody.
