Woman, grandchild die in building collapse

A woman and her grandson were killed when an under-construction building collapsed in west Delhi while they were on way to a market, police said today.

The three-storeyed building collapsed in Guru Nanak Dev Nagar locality in west Delhi last evening in which three persons were also injured and police have arrested the contractor Harpreet Singh.

Kamal Devi and her grandson Akshit, 3, were killed in the incident. "They were on way to market to buy milk when the building came down crashing. Parts of concrete fell on them and they died," a senior police official said.

Police said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the collapse. A case has been registered and further investigations are on, the official said.Police said construction activity was going on at the building to add more floors when it came crashing down at around 5pm yesterday.

Some passers-by were trapped under the debris and a Maruti van was damaged, the official said adding a case of negligence was registered.

Soon after the incident, four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and firemen pulled out four persons, including three children from the debris.

All of them were rushed to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital where the woman Kamal Devi and her grandson succumbed to their injuries.
