Whopping allocation for better policing in budget

The state budget increases fund to Rs470 cr for fiscal 2010-11

The state government has announced a whopping increase of 73% for the home department increasing the fund allotment from 346.45 crore in 2009-10 to Rs470 crore for the current fiscal year. The highest allocation of Rs172.23 crore is for the police modernisation process followed by the allocation of Rs149.23 crore for setting up new Indian Reserved Police Groups.

"The state government has given high weightage to police modernisation. It plans to equip the police with better arms and ammunition and technologies," a senior police officer said. The budget allocation for police modernisation in the year 2009-10 was Rs60 crore which has increased to Rs170 crore in the year 2010-11.

Director General of Police, Gujarat State, SS Khandwawala said with this budget allocation, the police can have good quality vehicles, arms and ammunition as well as more police personnel can be recruited which will ensure better policing in the state.

Last years maximum allocation of Rs96 cr was for police modernisation process.

The state government has allocated Rs204.65 crore for the year 2008-09 and Rs346.65 crore for 2009-10, which eventually increased to Rs470 crore for the current fiscal year.

The allocation for Border Area Development has decreased from 42 crore (2009-10) to Rs32 crore for the current year. Apart from that Rs5.74 crore has been allocated to develop 12 new police stations across the state.  For the first time the state government has announced the formation of a new battalion to protect Narmada dam and other assets related to it. "It will protect the Sardar Sarovar, Narmada dam and the Narmada canal," a home department official said.

Prison modernisation and formation of new cells was so far a part of the police modernisation project, however, this year, Rs22.93 crore has been dedicated exclusively for prisons of the state.

Formation of 42 new divisional police offices and upgrading 43 existing ones is also a priority of the state government.
