Prices of wheat-based products have declined by up to 12 per cent in Punjab in the past few days on account of fresh wheat supply being made under the Centre's Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for bulk consumers.

The wholesale prices of wheat flour has come down from Rs17 per kg to Rs15 per kg while rates of refined flour (maida) has dropped by Rs2 per kg to Rs16 per kg in the state, according to flour mill owners.

"The rates of wheat-based products have dipped because of fresh supply of wheat being made available by the FCI under OMSS," Punjab Roller Flour Miller's Association President Naresh Ghai told PTI today.

Facing pressure from all quarters on spiralling food prices, the Centre had curtailed the floor rate of wheat from Rs1,406.75 per quintal to Rs 1,239.89 a quintal for offloading to bulk users under OMSS.

Significantly, Punjab has exhausted its entire wheat quota of 1,01,982 tonnes fixed for the months starting from October last till March 15, 2010, for its sale to bulk users under the OMSS.

"We have received encouraging response from bulk consumers under OMSS as the entire quota has been exhausted which was meant for the period till March 15, 2010," a senior official of FCI said.

Flour mills have demanded release of more wheat under OMSS for bulk users so as to further contain the prices. "We want the Centre to allocate more wheat (under OMSS) for the state which will further help in reducing wheat based products prices," Ghai said.

Acute shortage of marketable wheat in Punjab, which is one of the largest producers of winter crop, had led to sharp hike in wheat-based products by up to 20 to 25 per cent. However, the Punjab government has not utilised its quota of 1,77,964 tonnes fixed under OMSS.
