Village guard killed by Maoists in Orissa

A village guard was hacked to death by the Maoists in Malkangiri district today, police said.

Jayadev Barik (26), who was missing since Tuesday, was killed by the ultras in a forest near Salim village in the wee hours, inspector in-charge of Mathili police station, Anirudh Rout said.

Security forces were rushed to launch a combing operation in the area after the incident, police said.

The rebels had probably abducted Barik before killing him in an apparent bid to terrorise the local residents in the Naxal-infested area, they said.

The Maoists had earlier issued warning to home guards, village guards and also special police officers in the district asking them to quit their jobs, sources said adding that other youths were also cautioned against joining these jobs.
